The addition of carbon to tungsten has properties similar to those of titanium carbide. This tungsten product is now used mainly as a cutting tool in the machining sector. Sintered carbide is neither a metal nor a ceramic product. Cemented carbide is made by reacting carbon and tungsten at temperatures of 1400-2000°C. Due to its high hardness of 86-93 HRA (68-81 HRC) and its ultra-high wear strength and high cutting speed, it could once not be called a tungsten alloy, but rather a cemented carbide.
Cemented carbide has a series of excellent properties such as high hardness, wear resistance, better strength and toughness, heat resistance and corrosion resistance. In particular, its high hardness and wear resistance, even at a temperature of 500℃also simply adhere to the same, at 1000℃still have a very high hardness. Cemented carbide is commonly used as tooling material, such as turning tools, milling tools, planing tools, drills, boring tools, etc.
It is used to cut cast iron, non-ferrous metals, plastics, chemical fibres, graphite, glass, stone and ordinary steel, and can also be used to cut heat-resistant steel, stainless steel, high manganese steel, tool steel and other difficult-to-process materials. Today, the cutting speed of new carbide tools is equal to hundreds of times that of carbon steel. Cemented carbide also has good resistance to cracking.
But the brittleness of carbide and the high hardness of cemented carbide make it difficult to machine and require special processes to do so. In contrast, high specific gravity tungsten alloys are much easier to machine. High specific gravity tungsten alloys are used as tungsten radiation shields, crankshafts and counterweights. These products are made from high specific gravity tungsten alloys because of their excellent properties such as good elongation, good corrosion resistance and radiation absorption.
