What is the Cemented Carbide?

Cemented carbide is a kind of high hardness metal hard compound alloy material, generally through the refractory metal hard compound and bonded metal through the powder metallurgy process to manufacture and become, widely used in cutting tool materials, such as lathe tools, milling cutters, drills, mining insert, mining tips, boring tools and so on.

Cemented carbide has a series of advantages such as high hardness, good abrasion resistance, good toughness, heat and corrosion resistance, etc. Generally, it can basically maintain high hardness and abrasion resistance at 500℃, and its hardness decreases at 1000℃, but it also has good hardness.

Four major classifications of Cemented Carbide

1.Tungsten and cobalt tungsten carbide, its main component is tungsten carbide (WC) and binder cobalt (Co), the brand name by the YG (hard, cobalt two words pinyin initials) and the average cobalt content of the percentage to indicate. For example, YG8 indicates that the average cobalt content of 8%, the rest is tungsten carbide tungsten cobalt tungsten carbide.

2.Tungsten, titanium and cobalt tungsten carbide, its main component is tungsten carbide (WC), titanium carbide (TiC) and cobalt (Co), the grade by YT (hard, titanium pinyin initials) and the average content of titanium carbide. For example, YT15 is a tungsten-titanium-cobalt tungsten carbide with an average content of 15% titanium carbide and the rest is tungsten carbide and cobalt.

3.Adding rare metal tungsten carbide alloy, can be divided into YG class and YT class based on adding rare tungsten carbide (TaC, NbC) two. The former consists of tungsten carbide + TaC (or NbC) + cobalt, the latter consists of tungsten carbide + titanium carbide + TaC (or NbC) + cobalt.

4.Nickel molybdenum titanium alloy, also known as titanium carbide-based alloy, is mainly composed of titanium carbide + nickel + molybdenum, with a certain amount of tungsten carbide.

Processing characteristics of Cemented Carbide

Cemented carbide is very brittle and hard, in the processing, in addition to the use of grinding, can also be used to cut the tool, its processing characteristics are as follows:

1.High hardness and brittleness. The hardness of Cemented Carbide is very high, higher than the general hardened steel hardness is about 20HRC, so it is extremely difficult to cut; and Cemented Carbide has no plasticity, brittleness is very large, by the cutting force and tool extrusion, cut into the cut out is very easy to collapse.

2.Cutting is powdery. Because of the brittleness of Cemented Carbide, the cutting will be in powder form, and it will not produce chip tumors at all, and the roughness of the processed surface is easy to reach.

3.Higher thermal conductivity and lower cutting temperature. The thermal conductivity of Cemented Carbide is 17~88W/(m-K), which is 15 times higher than hardened steel on average, so the cutting temperature is much lower than that of hardened steel.

4.Chips and knife surface contact is very short. When cutting cemented carbide, the cutting force is concentrated in the vicinity of the cutter mouth, which is easy to cause tool chipping, and the main form of tool wear is rear face wear.
